Frequently Asked Questions

Choosing The Right Plaster Mouldings

How do I choose the right cornice or coving for my property?

A good starting point is the age and style of your property. Victorian and Edwardian homes generally suit larger decorative cornices, while Art Deco and modern interiors often work better with cleaner lines and simpler profiles.

Ceiling height is also important. Larger rooms with high ceilings can accommodate deeper, more decorative mouldings, whereas smaller rooms tend to suit more subtle designs.

We always recommend ordering a sample first where possible to help visualise the scale and detail in your space.

What size ceiling rose should I choose?

The ideal ceiling rose size depends on both the room dimensions and ceiling height. As a guide:

  • Small rooms: 400mm–520mm
  • Medium rooms: 520mm–600mm
  • Large rooms/high ceilings: 600mm+

A larger chandelier or statement light fitting generally works best with a larger ceiling rose.

Can I mix traditional and modern mouldings?

Yes. Many interiors combine traditional plaster features with modern décor successfully. Simpler cornices and clean-lined panel mouldings can create a balanced transitional look while still adding character.

Do plaster mouldings increase property value?

Decorative plaster mouldings can enhance the appearance and character of a property, particularly period homes. Original-style cornices, ceiling roses, and wall panels are highly desirable features for many buyers.

Measuring & Ordering

How much cornice or coving do I need?

Measure the full perimeter of the room, including chimney breasts and alcoves where required. We recommend ordering an additional 15–20% to allow for mitre cuts and wastage during installation.

How much adhesive will I need?

As a general guide:

  • 1kg of adhesive covers approximately 2 metres of cornice
  • 25kg of adhesive covers approximately 50 metres

Larger or heavier mouldings may require additional adhesive.

Are your products handmade?

Yes. Our plaster mouldings are traditionally handmade using plaster, hessian reinforcement, and timber laths where required. Due to the handmade nature of plaster products, minor variations and natural surface marks can occur.

Can you match existing mouldings?

Yes. We offer a bespoke matching and replication service for damaged or missing cornices, ceiling roses, and decorative plaster details.

Simply send us:

  • Clear photographs
  • Approximate dimensions
  • Required quantities

We can then advise on reproduction options.

Delivery Information

How long does delivery take?

Most products are handmade to order. Typical lead times are approximately 7–14 working days depending on order size and product type.

We will contact you to confirm delivery once your order is ready.

What time will my delivery arrive?

Deliveries are generally made Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm, depending on traffic and delivery routes.

Why are deliveries kerbside only?

Due to insurance and health & safety requirements, deliveries are made to kerbside only. Customers are responsible for moving and storing products safely after delivery.

Why do plaster mouldings sometimes arrive slightly damp?

Plaster products are often delivered still wet or still curing. This is completely normal and can actually help during installation as the mouldings remain slightly more flexible while drying.

Why is there minimal packaging?

We aim to reduce unnecessary waste and plastic packaging wherever possible. Plaster products also benefit from ventilation during transport and storage.

Storage & Handling

How should I store plaster mouldings?

Products should be stored:

  • On a flat, dry surface
  • Indoors in a ventilated area
  • Away from moisture
  • Supported evenly along their length

Cornices can also be stored upright at a slight angle against a wall.

Why is correct storage important?

Incorrect storage can lead to cracking, distortion, or discolouration. Plaster mouldings are delicate and should always be handled carefully by two people where possible.

Can plaster mouldings get damaged by damp?

Yes. As plaster is a natural material, prolonged exposure to moisture or poor ventilation can lead to staining or fungal growth.

Installation

Do you offer installation services?

Yes. We provide professional installation services for cornices, ceiling roses, panel mouldings, and bespoke plasterwork.

Please contact us with:

  • Room sizes
  • Product codes
  • Photographs if possible

We can then provide an installation quotation.

Can I install plaster cornice myself?

Experienced DIY installers can fit smaller mouldings, however larger or decorative cornices are best installed by a professional due to weight, mitre cutting, and finishing requirements.

What adhesive should I use?

We recommend a quality plaster coving or cornice adhesive suitable for gypsum plaster products. Larger mouldings should be fixed using both adhesive and mechanical fixings.

How are plaster cornices fixed?

Traditional plaster cornices are normally installed using:

  • Cove adhesive
  • Screws or mechanical fixings
  • Joint reinforcement where required

Fixings are then filled and sanded before decorating.

Can cornices be fitted on uneven walls?

Yes. Traditional plaster cornices can usually accommodate minor wall irregularities during installation. This is very common in older properties.

Can you install around high windows or awkward spaces?

Yes. Cornices can often be cut around window architraves or adapted to suit unusual ceiling layouts while maintaining the overall flow of the room.

Painting & Finishing

How should plaster mouldings be painted?

Fresh plaster should first be sealed using a mist coat (diluted emulsion). Once dry, standard emulsion paint can be applied.

Do plaster mouldings require preparation before painting?

Minor filling and sanding may be required after installation to achieve a seamless finish, particularly at joints and mitres.
